What is Grounding (Earthing) and how do I practice it?

If you have ever experienced a Reiki session or attended a Chakra Workshop with me then you’ll have heard me talk about and recommend ‘Grounding.’ (listen here)

Simply put, grounding is making a connection with the earth. This therapeutic technique permits realignment of your energy!

How do I ground myself?

Grounding yourself is done by making contact with the earth’s surface. Walking barefoot outside; in the grass, on the sand, in the ocean etc. Please note, there is a time and a place for walking barefoot, I do not recommend walking barefoot in extreme weather or in areas that are unsafe to do so. Always be aware of your surroundings! Not one who loves the feeling of the grass on their feet or the squish of mud between your toes? Go for a swim, sit in a park, lay on the sand or walk along concrete!

Why should I practice it?

Being grounded makes you feel centered, balanced and aligned with your life!

When you are not grounded you will notice that things are not often going to plan. Your life may feel scattered and your path is unclear. Not being grounded has a negative impact on sleep, stress, anxiety and concentration. Typically, someone who is not grounded may not feel satisfied with the direction of their life.

Grounding and Chakras

Grounding is a great technique to help maintain your Root Chakra health between Reiki sessions or Chakra Balancing. I recommend grounding as a regular practice and especially to clients who present with an unbalanced Root Chakra. When your Root Chakra is balanced, you will feel in control of your life and calm. The Science behind Grounding

Studies have shown that Grounding results in:

improved circulation

better sleep

reduced stress (regulation of cortisol)

reduced pain and inflammation In one study, by Chevalier, Gaétan et al., they concluded that '[e]merging evidence shows that contact with the Earth—whether being outside barefoot or indoors connected to grounded conductive systems—may be a simple, natural, and yet profoundly effective environmental strategy against chronic stress, ANS dysfunction, inflammation, pain, poor sleep, disturbed HRV, hypercoagulable blood, and many common health disorders, including cardiovascular disease. The research done to date supports the concept that grounding or earthing the human body may be an essential element in the health equation [...].' Do you want to read more about grounding?
